March 23rd, 2022 Blog

From the Desk of:
Beth Ann Wilmore MSN, RN | Director of Nursing

What is a normal blood pressure?

Normal blood pressure for most adults is defined as a systolic pressure of less than 120 and a diastolic pressure of less than 80. The top number is the maximum pressure the heart exerts while beating (systolic pressure). The bottom number is the amount of pressure in the arteries between beats (diastolic pressure).

What is hypertension?

Hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90 and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Over time, if untreated, it can cause health conditions such as heart disease and stroke.

Here are some ways to lower your blood pressure:

1. Lose extra pounds and watch your waistline.
2. Exercise regularly. Take a brisk walk every day!
3. Eat a healthy diet.
4. Reduce sodium in your diet.
5. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.
6. Quit smoking.
7. Cut back on caffeine.
8. Reduce your stress.
